Background of the Study
Artisans in Sapele contribute significantly to the local economy, yet they often face unique mental health challenges exacerbated by socio-economic pressures (Eze, 2023). Fluctuating incomes, job insecurity, and limited access to mental health resources have heightened stress levels among these skilled workers (Ike, 2024). Recent investigations highlight those artisanal occupations, characterized by irregular working hours and physically demanding tasks, can lead to burnout, anxiety, and depression (Olu, 2023). Furthermore, cultural factors and social stigma regarding mental health issues often discourage artisans from seeking help (Bassey, 2025). This study evaluates the prevalence of mental health challenges among artisans, considering both work-related stressors and broader socio-cultural influences (Ajibade, 2023). By critically examining the interplay between occupational demands and mental well-being, the research seeks to inform targeted interventions and support systems for this often-overlooked group (Nwosu, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Artisans in Sapele face mounting mental health challenges due to economic instability, poor working conditions, and social stigmatization, yet research addressing these issues is minimal (Adegoke, 2023). The lack of comprehensive data on the psychological effects of occupational stress in this sector prevents the formulation of effective support programs (Oluwaseun, 2024). This study seeks to fill the gap by systematically investigating the mental health issues prevalent among artisans, aiming to provide insights that could guide future mental health interventions and policy formulation.

Significance of the Study
This study is pivotal in highlighting the mental health struggles of artisans, a neglected segment in occupational health research. The findings will provide evidence for policymakers and community leaders to design interventions that support mental wellness, enhance productivity, and reduce stigma (Akinola, 2024; Eze, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is confined to evaluating mental health challenges among artisans in Sapele Local Government Area, Delta State. It does not encompass other occupational groups or broader regional comparisons.
